Tips and tricks part 1 - Timing is everything

December 11th, 2007 by admin

When you are about to publish new web site, timing can be most important factor. For this example, lets say that you are big tennis fan, and you are starting blog about US Open tournament and tennis in US in general, and of course you want to monetize your blog.

Money can come from variety of different sources, but lets say that you want to put Google ads, or some similar PPC advertising program on your blog. Now all that is left is to publish a lot of articles and start making money, right? Unfortunately things are bit more complicated than that.

In order to earn some money you must:
a- bring some users to your site
b- make sure that users are well targeted
you don’t want to have some random users, what you need is people interested in tennis, who will eventually click on you ads (which are context based in most cases), and bring you some money.

So, we need a lot of tennis fans, preferably ones who are interested in US Open tournament.
Lets see what can we learn using keyword remix.

If you visit this link, you will see something like this

Analysis of tennis usa keyord

As you can see, there are few large spikes on the trends graph.
Why is that so, you wonder? Answer is really simple, US Open is held once per year, usually in August/September.

What conclusions can we make from this data?
First of all, its really obvious that winter period is probably worst time to start our blog about tennis in the USA and US Open. So what should you do?

Lets take all that we learned from this and make a plan:

- Publish just in the right time

So we learned that most users searches Google, in September, but if you start to write when the tournament starts, your site wont even be indexed by google, and when you finally start to receive traffic from google, the tournament will bi probably over.

So you need to start bit earlier (2-3 months), start by writing texts on some topic like:
- how the preparations are going
- write few interesting facts about players that will play in the US Open.
- publish scores, from recent tournaments, etc

After you write couple of articles start to promote your site, but continue to write regularly to preserve your readers.
(methods of promotions are not topic of this post, but you can use Google adwords service, banners on other sites, spread some buzz about your site on social networks…. )

- Make sure that your site stands hi in the search engine results

Being #3 or #13 in Google results, can mean the difference between $xxxxx and $xx earned.
Most people don’t click above result #5, and only few percent of them goes to the second page of Google.
If you are stand too low in search engine results, consider doing SEO on your site or hire SEO expert.

KeywordRemix can also give you some other nice data, for example you should check out our keywords stats page to see if anyone else is interested in same topic/keyword as you, also compare number and charts for few different keywords, lets say tennis, tennis usa and US Open, and compare results and numbers.
The higher numbers are, the harder it would be for you to make it to the top, so choose carefully!

and don’t forget once you made it, you are just on the half way to success, then you really need to push hard, write quality articles, and preserve high position until next season.

That it for this time, see you in part two.

    Nice post.

    You mention:

“Being #3 or #13 in Google results, can mean the difference between $xxxxx and $xx earned.
Most people don’t click above result #5, and only few percent of them goes to the second page of Google.”

Have you seen any actual research on that? I think you are correct. Would love to see some actual stats, though.

I wonder if google publishes it somehwere?

    cheers! - Ryan
